As is well known, Koch was severely criticised for the premature character of his deductions, and in view of the comparatively small amount of experiments on which he based his report the criticisms to which he was subjected seemed not entirely unmerited. God knows sanitarians have had hard enough struggle to win approximately a pure food supply in spite of commercialism, to have the efforts of years weakened and in a measure nullified by the theory of one man, who had no more conclusive evidence to offer than a few experiments and a converse dogmatic deduction of his own. Ugly rumors were circulated, a very persistent one being that Koch's paper was instigated by the German Kaiser to mollify certain agricultural factions in the German Empire. A man who has made the contributions to science that Koch has ought to be free from such unkind thrusts until indisputable proof is brought forward to show his guilt. Such statements, however, carried little weight, and I only quote this one to show that no man, however great or deserving of respect, is wholly free from the onslaughts of choler and unkind criticism so often found in medical gatherings. The only proper way to refute a statement and prove it wrong is to present ample and stronger testimony against it. Personalities and stabs in the dark are not arguments and react more to the injury of those who use them than those against whom they are directed. Koch may have been at fault in making his announcement prematurely, but the only proper way to prove him wrong is to overwhelm his evidence, however weak, with stronger proof on the other side.
